Dialog Offers Affordable Mobile Broadband

At last the local carriers namely Dialog and Mobitel are offering data bundles for their postpaid customers. I opted for Dialog’s mobile broadband package, since there was no connection fee or refundable deposits. And the additional usage charge was only Rs.1 per Mega Bite compared to Mobitel’s Rs.2 per MB. Which I think is affordable, compared to Mobitel’s Zoom, where you have to spend Rs. 2,000/-.Β  But of course Mobitel’s package is cheaper and valuable if you use it as your primary connection. Where as for me, um using Lanka Bell’s WiMax as my primary internet, and was looking for a cheaper alternative to be used when um on the move to check my emails or to beta test mobile applications.

I went for the Medium package, that is the 350 MB thingy for a monthly rental of Rs. 200 plus taxes. There’s also a Small package with 75 MB data bundled for low as Rs. 50.

I have no idea how efficient is Mobitel’s service with regard to this particular service. It seems that Mobitel sends you a system generated SMS when you exceed your data limit. But I can tell you, Dialog has to improve drastically.

On Tuesday, I went to Dialog Service Center located at ‘Meewala’ Building at Colombo 04 and subscribed to this service. The customer care was excellent, but din’t last for long. Why I am saying that is, the guy called me later during the day to notify that the service was not activated due to some technical issues and not to use the internet, that was nice.Β  And he also said that he will notify me once the service was activated, but he never called me back, what you call that?

And the whole of Wednesday I was logging into MyDialog to see if it is activated under MyData:

Then I finally decided to call the guys today, that’s Thursday to see what’s going on. To see it has already been activated.

I think what Dialog should do is, once the service is activated, the system should send a SMS to inform that the service has been activated. And also should send a SMS when the usage limit exceeds. Because right now you don’t have any other way to monitor your usage, except for some manual method, where you have to track it with your Packet Data Counter.

Other than that, I am satisfied with the speed, I was able to watch mobile YouTube smoothly, without any stopage πŸ™‚

Wondering for how long this satisfaction will last πŸ˜‰ will I have to call their billing section, when I get my statement?

Keep an eye on this post, I will update this, once I get my bill.

  1. I don't think your satisfaction will last for long. You will experience Network congestion,DNS errors and many more in near future. Good luck with your dialog connection.

  2. Yes Dialog the the cheapest broadband. i have activate the 75mb for my mobile and works well. yes the only problem is to monitor the usage. so i have clear the data counter in mobile to monitor the usage. Dialog has to inform customers where their usage reach 90%. that's what mobitel do. they send sms when completing 90% usage and then another sms after full usage. hope Dialog will do the same in near future..

  3. Hi Guys,

You seem to have a lot of experience in mobile broad band, just to give an update on whats Mobitel has been up to, they have revised there data tariffs since last month. also are giving a superb price on the device when it comes to group sales. recently they updated the free bundle in the 490 rental pacakge from 750MB to 1.5GB. also have slashed the excess usage from Rs. 5.00 for every 10Mb to Rs. 1.50 & 2.00 for every 10.MB.

If you are a uphara user, you can get the SENEHASA data connection, which is 1GB for a rent of Rs. 240.00 per month.
