Airtel Gets The Green Light From Head Office

Airtel would launch its operations on January 12, 2009, kicking off a media campaign today, Monday the 5th January 2009 and taking full page advertisements in local newspapers.

Bharti Airtel Lanka Limited is the fifth operator in Sri Lanka. The entry of Airtel Lanka has triggered a price war among local operators who have offered steep discounts and loyalty packages to retain customers.

In another development the Board of Investment, a state investment promotions agency, said on December 29, it was giving concessions to RTEC Mobile Lanka (Private) Ltd, a firm sponsored by Global Electroteks UK.

Electroteks is a group of Sri Lanka origin which already runs a data backbone in the island. BOI said the project envisaged an investment of 100 million US dollars.

The firm will offer GSM and SCDMA based services in mobile and broadband internet.

  1. hey Guys & Gals,
Do you believe that Airtel is coming here because of their kindness towards Sri Lankans..? oh..I don't believe…coz I know much about Airtel & following facts will guide you..(I challenge Airtel to give counter arguments for those..)

    1. Airtel is using cheapest Chinese Equipments, that's why they can come with lower charges

    2. The performance will degrade very sooner (less than 1 year), then all the subscribers will have to suffer.

    3. they are coming with both 2G & 3G…still now they are struggling with 2G (GSM). The products they've used for 2G are from the rejected brand from most of other Operators. Therefor their 2G (GSM) network is still having many problems & it'll be one of worst network in the World

    4. their delay in launching in Sri Lanka was mainly due to Point (3)

    5. Airtel's performance in India is no doubt. Its superior. the simple reason is they use high quality European product. But how can we have a guarantee of similar performance here with these Chinese low quality products..?

    6. Just think about Global Trends. In future Indians & Chinese will enter into world market & they'll extract all the profits from other Nations. (Airtel is coming with both Chinese & Indian involvement- this will not be good for Sri Lanka in future)

    7. Bharathi (india) Airtel's one of major intentions is to use Sri Lanka as a place for their Testings (as a test bed). This will cause high power, Microwave emissions which can cause for health effects (headache, Cancer..Gene Abnormalities)

Above are only some facts…Sri Lankans, You may know some other facts too…specially People from Technical Areas may add more into this.

Lets see the things with open mind…this is our country, we are Sri Lankans…!!

  2. @True Sri Lankan, I do agree with you that Airtel's primary motive might be to use Sri Lanka as a “test bed”, b'cos it would be cost effective for them to experiment new technologies and not b'cos of anything else, like you mention. But God know best!

However I don't agree at all with your point one and two. As far as I know, Bharti Airtel Lanka is using Huawei Techmnologies' equipments, the same manufacturer who supplies for Mobitel, and other fixed and mobile telephone operators in Sri Lanka.

Of course Huawei is a Chinese company, and like you pointed out, if performance of Chinese equipment is to 'degrade' in less than a year, well, we all should be suffering by now, ain't we? 😉

By the way, I like to mention since you have challenge Airtel to give counter arguments, that I am not in what so ever affiliated to Airtel.

  3. mack005 : really appreciate your comments.

as I know most of other SL operators also use Chinese products (mainly Huawei & ZTE). But the problem is, the release which Airtel is using is proven to be failed in other foreing markets. That will be the main reason to degradate its performance (mainly in GSM). But I presume, they will have a good 3G network.

anyway if you do a tharough technical strudy, you'll realize that chinese products are not strictly follow the standards & recommendation defined by http://www.3gpp.com
the high power emmision, lack of clearness of the voice calls, high radiation..etc are some evidence for this.

    1. I agree, products which are not strictly to the set standards are hazardous. And I believe its our local regulators responsibility to ban such item from coming into the country.

  4. The Whole Sri Lanka now uses Chinese Products. I worked for ZTE ( 2nd Largest Telecom in China) While I Was with them they were doing projects mainly with SLT , Dialog ( data cards etc) almost all the sri lankan Telecom companies. Being in Sri Lanka I think its better we learn to appreciate something rather we always compare and criticize about something. We never manufacture anything from this country all are imported. Always we depend on someone else product.

As far as I know Airtel in Sri Lanka – Good for people who cannot afford to go for a connection.

Bad for all the Existing Service Providers .

Forget about the Delay in Airtel Launch dates …. Think about the Damage it has done for Dialog and other telecom.

I would say 2days world people are so attached to these mobile communication system where they cannot live without it. You could test it by switching off your mobile for 1 week and then see the amount of response you get in your life.

    – Not all the Airtel Customers will go for a Dialog or Mobitel in Future if they give low rate but All the Dialog and mobitel customers can effort to get a Airtel Sim ( Prepaid) because its free eee..

  7. There is increasing evidence through new research which points to damaging radiation levels leading to detrimental health effects. Airtel with their ridiculously cheap rates and offers could definitely have hidden issues with their phones and damaging levels of radiation.

I just used an airtel phone for a second and i got an instant headache, then wondered if i was actually being paranoid or if it related to the phone so i decided to do some reasearch and look for any comments on the net. Seeing such comments defintely provides doubt about the legitimacy of airtel phones and services and the likelyhood of irrelevant levels of radiaiton.
